US copper tariffs shake global trade

The United States covers around 50% of its copper consumption through imports. Chile remains the largest supplier, followed by Canada and Mexico. While local production contributes just 5% of global output, it continues trending downward. According to the US Geological Survey, US copper production dropped 3% in 2024, following an 11% decrease in 2023.

Copper enters the country mainly as refined metal or concentrates, with total imports nearing 850,000 tonnes in 2024. Given current output levels and existing reserves, replacing these flows with domestic supply appears unlikely.
